Bolivar Hemp Company had our soft-launch in mid/late December, days before the signing of the US Farm Bill that had provisions legalizing hemp federally, and it has been a huge success. Our branding has been very well received and our sales are steadily increasing. We are grateful for our new customers and the businesses who have been very generous in helping a woman-owned business launch. Those businesses include Indo Expo, 04:20 Inc., H3mp.com, King of Quality, Utopia Wellness Spa and Lounge and the Ark-La-Tex Cannabis Business Expo hosted by Imperious Expo + Directory. The latter we will have a booth at this coming November – stay tuned. We appreciate the support!
It’s been a whirlwind these last few weeks for Bolivar Hemp Company. Founder Larisa Bolivar was invited to be a keynote speaker at the 2nd Annual Vermont Cannabis and Hemp Convention on May 18-19, 2019 produced by the New England Cannabis Network (NECANN) and Heady Vermont. She will be speaking on behalf of the nonprofit she heads, the Cannabis Consumers Coalition, a cannabis consumer watchdog organization with a history of affecting policy protecting cannabis consumers and expanding cannabis consumer rights. She was also named one of 100 important women in cannabis in the Green Market Report’s 100 of the Most Important Women in Weed 2019.
Bolivar Hemp Company launched with three products mid-December, all formulated with 300 mg of full-spectrum hemp extracted CBD. Hemp Muscle Rub formulated for joints and muscles lightly fragranced with an earthy mint scent that is pleasant and not medicinal smelling leaving a slight icy/hot feeling when massaged into the skin. Hemp Relief Cream that is also formulated to support pain management and is also very soothing and moisturizing for skin conditions like dermatitis. The Hemp Massage Balm is now an all-purpose balm that can be used for dry and chapped skin and lips, as well as for massaging sore and tight muscles.
In late-January we launched a new bath and body product line, also infused with full-spectrum hemp CBD. Our sugar scrubs and matching scented lotion are all natural and made with 100% plant-based ingredients and contains 250 mg of CBD with highly moisturizing and non-greasy hemp oil, avocado oil, and coconut oil. Lotions are fast absorbing and hydrating with no greasy residue that leave behind beautifully scented and soft skin.
Bolivar Hemp Company’s table at Indo Expo and Spa Day by 04:20 Inc. and Utopia All Natural Wellness Spa and Lounge was very popular with attendees, distributors and consumers alike. We provided guests with CBD hand-softening treatments that were a huge success. We sold out of all of the products we brought to both shows and had some customers who bought one of each product! Our Muscle Rub was and continues to be our best seller at events, and we be sure to bring more of that to events than any other product to ensure we have enough. Most important was the one-on-one interaction with customers, as evidenced from the big smile that our founder and CEO is wearing.
After the US Farm Bill passed in December with provisions legalizing hemp, there have been ongoing changes to hemp and CBD laws. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been issuing statements on CBD and hemp, including restricting language on making health claims because the cannabinoid is currently being used in investigational drugs. Also targeted were companies use infuse CBD in food and beverages. This is just the beginning of the battle for the rights to use CBD as a food supplement.
Now that the Federal Government has legalized hemp, the market is experiencing exponential growth and states have also been rolling out their own hemp regulations. Some we like, some we don’t. For example, Georgia. The state released the most restrictive law in the Union for those interested in hemp processing. The bill proposes that only three people will be awarded and that applicants must pay a $100,000.00 NONREFUNDABLE license application fee.
Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner, Scott Gottlieb, resigned on March 5th 2019, leaving hemp policy and CBD into the hands of whoever replaces him. Mr. Gottlieb has put together a stakeholder group to work on hemp and CBD regulations and the FDA also announced this month that they will be having a hearing in April to discuss CBD.
The hemp market is experiencing a surge of growth right out of the gate with mainstream well-known brands like Levi’s entering the market introducing a line of “cottonized hemp” denimwear. The uses of hemp are many, including food, ethanol gas, clothing, paper, building materials, and of course, skincare and for supporting pain management, inflammatory skin issues, and is deeply moisturizing.
